Filson Dryden Backpack hands-on review

The Filson Dryden Backpack strikes a rare balance: it delivers the rugged, heritage‑inspired aesthetic Filson is known for while offering the comfort, organization, and practicality that many of their more traditional packs lack. The version shown here is the Ducks Unlimited edition in Dry Grass, which is no longer available. Filson currently offers the Dryden in Whiskey, Otter Green, and Black which are all great colors as well.

Design & First Impressions

The Dryden blends modern materials with classic Filson styling. It doesn’t scream “technical outdoor pack,” nor does it look like a minimalist office bag. Instead, it sits comfortably in the middle: ideal for travel, day hikes, commuting, and everyday carry when you want something that looks good but understated.

Made from weather‑resistant 1000D nylon, the pack feels tough without being heavy. Filson’s signature bridle leather accents elevate the look without compromising durability.

Laptop & Side Compartments

The dedicated laptop sleeve easily fits a 15″ MacBook Air with room to spare, and there’s additional space and pocket for flat items like a tablet, notebook, or magazines. The laptop compartment bottom is padded but not suspended so at the same level as the bottom of the backpack.

The side pockets are a standout feature: sturdy, structured, and sized perfectly for medium water bottles, flasks, umbrellas, outdoor knife or even a compact tripod. They’re functional and deep without bulging outward too much. The material also will not make these stretch out over time.

Front Organization

The front compartment offers thoughtful organization without going overboard. My only complaint: the flap uses a single zipper pull. A second pull would make top‑only access much easier and more secure.

Behind this pocket is a deep, hidden sleeve that is excellent for travel documents, a wallet, or a backup phone. Items can settle toward the bottom, but the added security makes it a great anti‑pickpocket feature.

Main Compartment & Build Quality

The main compartment is surprisingly spacious for a 25L pack. Inside, you’ll find a small zippered pocket for essentials and smaller items. The bottom panel includes extra padding for protection, and the heavy‑duty coil zippers, while occasionally stiff, offer solid weather resistance. Leather zipper pulls and the bridle leather grab handle add the familiar Filson touch.

Comfort & Carry

The Dryden does not come with sternum straps, so I added aftermarket ones (easy to find on eBay for around $10). They attach cleanly to either the nylon or leather loops on the shoulder straps. While it would be nice if Filson included them, I understand why they don’t. Permanently attached sternum straps can look messy and get in the way when not in use.

Favorite Features

  • Build quality — rugged yet lightweight
  • Self‑standing design — convenient when loading/unloading
  • Structured side pockets — perfect for bottles and quick‑access items
  • Front zip pocket — secure access for wallet, phone, pens, EDC
  • Hidden center pocket — ideal for travel documents
  • Spacious main compartment — feels larger than 25L
  • Laptop sleeve — fits 15″ laptops with room for extras
  • Versatile aesthetic — looks good at the airport, office, or trail
  • Comfortable grab handle
  • Bridle leather accents — classic Filson character
  • Travel‑friendly luggage pass‑through

Final Thoughts

The Filson Dryden Backpack is an excellent daily and travel companion. While Filson is famous for Rugged Twill and Tin Cloth, this 1000D Nylon offers impressive weather resistance, abrasion durability, and a lighter overall feel. For many users, it may be the best all‑around Filson backpack when you consider style, comfort, organization, features, and price.

I’ve had this backpack for many years now, and it has proven itself everywhere from airline/train/automobile travel to hiking in Switzerland, exploring Greece, snorkeling in the Florida Keys, wandering local trails, going to the office and countless everyday outings. I rotate between a few other packs depending on the activity, like my Filson Journeyman, North Face Recon, or Osprey Daylite, but the Dryden consistently stands out. It blends many of the best features of those bags into one versatile, reliable backpack that works for almost anything.
