Most visitors to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshorehead for the Lake Michigan overlook, the scenic drive, the dune climb, and the popular trails. Beyond those well-known attractions, however, are many quieter trails that see only a handful of day hikers.
Sleeping Bear Point, at the northern end of the national lakeshore, offers just that. A chance to experience the dunes in relative solitude. The sweeping landscape provides stunning views across Lake Michigan toward the Manitou Islands, accompanied only by birdsong and the gentle breeze rustling through the trees and dune grass.
The scent of the dunes mixed with the fresh waters of Lake Michigan is unmistakable. It’s remarkably different from the salty air of the oceans and seas environment. Standing atop the dunes, the sheer scale of this Great Lake becomes apparent, even though the opposite shoreline remains out of sight.
At first glance, the landscape is dominated by shades of green, beige, and blue. A closer look, however, reveals a surprising burst of color as wildflowers and native plants reach their peak bloom this time of year.
Today’s hike led through towering dunes, sandy paths, and forested trails before returning along the shoreline.It was especially encouraging to see so many Piping Plovers darting along the beach near their protected nesting areas. When they stop moving, their camouflage is so effective that they become remarkably difficult to spot.
