Filson Utility Tote Kyler Martz hands-on review

These limited‑edition tote bags feature custom graphics by Kyler Martz, an artist known throughout the Pacific Northwest for his art inspired by historic maritime, naval, and aviation artwork. Filson produced several variations of his designs for this release.

The tote itself is modeled after the classic bags boaters once used to haul large blocks of ice aboard. For everyday practicality, the size has been scaled down and the profile narrowed, making it a versatile daily‑carry bag. Both the body and the handles are constructed entirely from Filson’s signature Rugged Twill. This is a heavy‑duty, 100% cotton fabric with a tear strength tested at over 1,400 pounds.

The material feels sturdy and premium, and the Twine color (light grey) provides a clean backdrop for the beaver graphic on the front. Inside, a large pocket easily fits magazines, a tablet, or similarly sized items. There’s plenty of room overall. While most buyers won’t be hauling ice, the bag lends itself to countless uses: beach trips, grocery runs, carrying a small bundle of firewood at camp, hauling outdoor gear, and more. It feels like the kind of bag that will last forever, no matter what you throw in it.

I wasn’t familiar with Kyler Martz’s work before spotting this tote on Filson’s website, but the artwork is playful and refreshingly different from Filson’s usual graphics. The original MSRP of $225 in 2025 may have been a bit steep, which likely explains why it eventually appeared in the Outlet in 2026. Price aside, it’s a great bag, and I’m curious to see what I end up using it for.

Made in USA with imported material.
